đź‘‘ Should you use AI to write for you? My conclusions

Published 6 months ago • 1 min read

I said yesterday that I would share my conclusions from the "Should You Use AI to Write for You?" debate with Joe.

Here it is:

This is a nuanced and complex topic. There are many different angles to consider. Ethics. IP ownership. Effort. Claiming others work. Learning.

There's no simple, one-size-fits-all answer. Anyone who says it's simple is wrong.

For me the key issue or question to answer is "what is the purpose of this writing?"

Joe's argument was that saying you used AI to write a book is like saying you used a car to run a marathon. I get that.

If the goal is to get from A to B, then I think using technology to do it quickly and efficiently is good.

But if your goal is to get fitter, and challenge yourself, then you want to do it the human way.

Back to writing: if the goal is to help the reader solve a problem or learn some information, then my argument is that if AI writing is better than what you could produce, then use AI.

Writing about a topic helps you learn and understand it better. It's an important but often overlooked benefit of writing. You lose out on the value of thinking and connecting ideas that happen when you write manually. You won't get that if you use AI.

So I think this is complex and nuanced, but the decision on whether to use AI comes down to the purpose of the writing for me.

What do you think? Hit reply and let me know!

Alastair.

AI has a copyright problem (or copyright has an AI problem)! Everyone seems to have a strong view on AI-generated and AI-assisted content. Some folks don't want to use AI tools for fear of losing ownership of their IP - a real concern - and there's a lot of misinformation about the legal situation. Rather than add to the uninformed speculation I figured the best thing to do is talk with an actual lawyer about this! And who better than Erin Austin, Esq, a lawyer who specializes in IP...

Chris Do is the epitome of a thought leader. I've been following his work for years as he's grown The Futur from a mere 200,000 followers on YouTube all the way to 2.4 million and growing. I had the pleasure of interviewing him on The Recognized Authority several years ago, and I knew that he'd be a great guest for The AI-Powered Thought Leader because he's considered and thoughtful. Chris and I discussed the overlap between AI and authentic thought leadership, and the challenges and...

I may have a Guinness World Record. I don’t know if they have “Longest Time to Start a Podcast” record, but if they do I have that locked in. I first started planning a podcast in July 2014, and it pains me to say that it took nearly 7 years before I actually launched The Recognized Authority in April of 2021. There were good reasons for delay… but probably not on the order of 7 years! When I think how much further I’d be now if I had started 3 or 4 years earlier, I regret that the delay was...
