đź‘‘ My Guinness World Record

I may have a Guinness World Record.

I don’t know if they have “Longest Time to Start a Podcast” record, but if they do I have that locked in.

I first started planning a podcast in July 2014, and it pains me to say that it took nearly 7 years before I actually launched The Recognized Authority in April of 2021.

There were good reasons for delay… but probably not on the order of 7 years!

When I think how much further I’d be now if I had started 3 or 4 years earlier, I regret that the delay was quite so long.

We all delay taking action on creating content for many reasons, and many of those barriers are valid:

  • "I don't have time right now"
  • "I'm not sure what to say"
  • "I don't know how to do it"

All valid, logical reasons not to take action. There are also underlying fears of criticism, exposure and looking silly. And a ton more barriers I haven't listed here.

The thing is: you will never feel ready.

The only way to feel ready is to learn by doing.

It's easy to kick the can down the road and say "I'll take action next week/month/year".

I've got the t-shirt - and possibly the Guinness trophy.

The first step on the road to authority is to publish something small. It might be a LinkedIn post, a blog post or even a short YouTube video.

Don't make a big production of it - take a small step.

Every journey starts with a step.

What action are you taking in 2024? I'd love to hear about it.

And if you want my help with dealing with any of those barriers, hit reply and let me know.

I've made every mistake possible, I'd love to help you learn from my experiences with this to accelerate your journey to authority.

- Alastair.

P.S. I recorded a YouTube showing the progression of my YouTube videos starting with a horribly cringe video from as far back as 2008. Watch the progression here.

AI has a copyright problem (or copyright has an AI problem)! Everyone seems to have a strong view on AI-generated and AI-assisted content. Some folks don't want to use AI tools for fear of losing ownership of their IP - a real concern - and there's a lot of misinformation about the legal situation. Rather than add to the uninformed speculation I figured the best thing to do is talk with an actual lawyer about this! And who better than Erin Austin, Esq, a lawyer who specializes in IP...

Chris Do is the epitome of a thought leader. I've been following his work for years as he's grown The Futur from a mere 200,000 followers on YouTube all the way to 2.4 million and growing. I had the pleasure of interviewing him on The Recognized Authority several years ago, and I knew that he'd be a great guest for The AI-Powered Thought Leader because he's considered and thoughtful. Chris and I discussed the overlap between AI and authentic thought leadership, and the challenges and...

Yesterday I wrote about the fact that authority marketing is slow and why you should do it anyway. TL;DR: because just like going to the gym, you WILL see life-changing results if you can trust the process and stick with it for a significant period of time. And I know there are folks out there prepared to be patient and stay the course. I also know there are folks out there who would love to be patient and stay the course, but you have bills to pay. A mortgage, a family, life. I’d love to...
